A Representação da Mulher na Imprensa Moçambicana: uma análise de género entre invisibilização e estereótipos
Synopsis
This study examines the representation of Mozambican women in the media in Mozambique, with an emphasis on the construction of gender representations. To this end, ten editions of the print newspapers O País and Notícias, published in the first half of April, were analyzed. The research aimed to identify recurring themes, the presence of gender stereotypes, and how women are portrayed in different roles and contexts. The findings indicate that women face significant obstacles in becoming sources of information due to their limited representation and the recurring victimization in media discourses. It is observed that their presence in the media remains strongly anchored in traditionally assigned female roles, as media outlets frequently reproduce stereotypes that restrict the visibility and appreciation of women’s skills and contributions to society. It is also noted that men continue to dominate public and discursive spaces, while female representation remains largely confined to the private sphere. Additionally, the presence of women in positions of authority or as experts is predominantly associated with political figures or government officials. This pattern reveals a duality in media coverage: while some women gain visibility in spheres of power, the majority remain marginalized in everyday narratives. This dynamic reinforces the persistence of stereotypes that predominantly confine women to the domestic sphere, disregarding their participation in other social and professional domains. In this way, the media play a central role in maintaining gender inequalities, perpetuating discursive constructions that hinder the expansion of female presence in various areas of public life.
